Summer 2013 production:
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd is a musical thriller with a libretto by Hugh Wheeler, based on the 1973 melodrama of the same title by Christopher Bond. Set in 19th century England, the musical tells the story of Benjamin Barker, alias Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after 15 years' transportation on trumped up charges. When he finds out that his wife poisoned herself after being raped by the judge who transported him, he vows revenge on the judge and, later, the whole world. He teams up with a pie-maker, Mrs. Lovett, and opens a barbershop in which he slits the throats of customers and has them baked into pies.
The 2007 movie version of the musical, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, has made this musical a household name and a pop culture staple. Out of the success of the film has come an opportunity for more staged productions to have success, and for more theater-loving audiences to find out why this one-of-a-kind, through-composed musical is considered — by so many — to be Stephen Sondheim's magnum opus.
Auditions for Sweeney Todd will be held in March of 2013.
Rehearsals will begin June 17, 2013 and run everyday for four weeks.
Sweeney Todd is currently slated to open on July 12th, 2013 and run for two weekends, closing on July 21st, 2013.
